Securities Investor Protection Corporation
A nonprofit, member-funded U.S. government-chartered corporation created under the Securities Investor Protection Act of 1970, based in Washington, D.C. Most registered U.S. broker-dealers must be members. When a member brokerage fails and customer assets are missing, SIPC oversees the liquidation and works with a court-appointed trustee to return customers' cash and securities, protecting each customer up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for cash).
